Grace - It's Not Just Something We Say at Dinner
I have a celebrity crush.
I read just about everything he writes because he makes me laugh, makes me think and kicks me in the pants. Not literally, that would be weird.
My daughter would call me a "fangirl". Whatever that means.
Want to know why I am such an avid "fan"?
Because this guy is real.
Just lay it all out there, good, bad, ugly, funny, spiritual and not-so-spiritual.
Real.
We need a lot more "real" people in our world.
People who are willing to say, hey, I'm not perfect, but I'm trying.
People who understand Grace.
I've been working on a piece for this blog over the past few days that's going to cause a lot of different reactions in those of you who read it.
And frankly, as much as I KNOW I have to write it, but publish it too, I'm feeling timid.
Because there are way too many people who have received Grace that have forgotten how to give it.
As a writer and blogger, you put yourself out there every time you hit the "publish" button on a post. Sometimes it scares me because I don't know how it will be received, but I publish it anyway because that's what having A Courageous Heart is all about, right?
Then there's the whole Obedience thing - and having lived in disobedience for so long, I don't want to visit that land anymore. So, I hit "publish" and know that God will do with it what He will.
It's all about Him anyway.
Which brings me to the point of this post - meet my celebrity crush - Jon Acuff.
He published a blog post today on his blog Stuff Christians Like that just blew my mind.
Well, most of his stuff blows my mind because his writing challenges me and encourages me in just the right way - snarky wit and all. Thanks Jon. No, for real, thanks.
Today's post affected me so deeply because of what I know is coming soon to this blank canvas I call a blog. And oddly, it gives me courage.
So, you guys need to read this.
Why do Christians lie so much? - by Jon Acuff
I don't know what grace hurdle you're facing right now, but I know that many of you are and I pray that what Jon had to say today will give you courage to continue too.
Because grace isn't just something we say at dinner.
As Christians, it's the world we need to inhabit.
With a Courageous Heart,
~~Robin

Not About Us
My iPod playlist is an ever changing mix of songs that would make you wonder if I was 15 or 50. It ranges from Disney (the Frozen movie soundtrack is the latest)
to Classic Rock (Queen, anyone?)
to Country - both old and new (Trisha Yearwood to Taylor Swift)
to Movie Music (Les Miserables)
to lots of Contemporary Christian (Third Day, Building 429, Casting Crowns, 7eventh Time Down) I'm kind of all over the map there, but a good song is a good song - know what I mean?
I've talked about music here before (check out this post HERE) and what an important part of life it is here in our home. Our family has a habit of breaking into song at any given time - at the dinner table, riding in the car, walking the dog - and for those who aren't used to being around us, it can be a bit of a shock to them when Journey's "Any Way You Want It" comes on and we ALL start singing.
Loudly.
And thankfully, mostly on key.
Music draws me in like no other artistic medium and it has the power to bring me to my feet or bring me to tears - often within the same song. And when it comes to Worship, nothing else has the power to stir me the way music does.
Can you relate?
On New Year's Eve, our family had the opportunity to travel to Winterfest at Liberty University. Two of our favorite bands were playing in the concert there that night - Third Day and Building 429 - and it honestly was the BEST New Year's Eve I've ever enjoyed. (Well, aside from the one where my husband proposed to me, but that's another blog post.)
What better way to bring in the new year than to be surrounded by 10,000 people in corporate worship, all singing praise to King Jesus.
None that I can think of.
It sure beat sitting on the couch waiting for the ball to drop.
Um-hmm.
Since then, I've been listening to Building 429's latest album a lot. Did you know that the name of their group is based on this verse:
"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." - Ephesians 4:29
And if you take time to check out their lyrics, you'll see fantastic theology there along with amazing encouragement for your day to day with Christ.
If you read Sunday's post (Soli Deo Gloria) you know it was all about using our creative gifts to bring Glory to God.
And in typical God fashion, the next day, this song was first up on my playlist:
Take a few minutes and listen to it.
No really.
Stop reading and click the play arrow.
Close your eyes - the video isn't amazing - and just let the lyrics wash over your heart today.
There is no greater thing we can do for God than to make ALL we do ALL for Him.
Because it's not ever about us anyway.
" Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters" - Colossians 3:23
With a Courageous Heart,
~~Robin
All the Glory (lyrics - italics mine)
You turn my world upside down
You turn it all inside out
You take the least, make them first
Pour yourself on those who thirst
And You use me because I’m weak
It’s here I find you lift me up just to lift You high
It never was about me, You get all the glory
And if I stand it’s only that I am in Your hands
It never was about me, You get all the glory
You’re the author of it all
So I live to make you known
Oh, If I’m last or if I’m low, You’ll make something beautiful
And You use me because I am weak.
It’s here I find you lift me up just to lift You high
It never was about me, You get all the glory
And if I stand it’s only that I am in Your hands
It never was about me, You get all the glory
Your way higher, Your will above my own
Your glory greater, and Your story will be told
Your story will be told
It’s here I find you lift me up just to lift You high
It never was about me, You get all the glory
And if I stand it’s only that I am in Your hands
It never was about me, You get all the glory

"Soli Deo Gloria"
I picked up my Bible the other day for my quiet time reading and an old copy of a devotional magazine fell out of the front cover. As I picked it up, I glanced at the date on the page it was folded open to - April 19, 2011.
The day my Dad died.
And for the first time the memory of that day didn’t crush my heart. Instead, I thought back over the past almost three years and marveled at the journey God has had me walking since then.
I knew immediately why I'd saved that particular piece. Even if it hadn’t been completely clear to me that day.
It was titled “Creative”.
You see, when my Dad died, it was the beginning of an awakening in me – a work that God was doing – one that would ultimately change the course of my life.
I always knew I was “creative”, but I’d floated from one thing to another, never quite finding my niche. I know now that was all part of his plan. My journey from rebellious and out of control teen to focused and driven police officer to successful businesswoman and entrepreneur to skating Mom and artist has all brought me to this place.
Writer.
He’s led me through a life of experience after experience allowing the cycle of success and failure to shape me into the woman he can use to bring glory to Himself.
Because it’s not about me.
It’s about Him.
Soli Deo Gloria.
To God alone be the glory.
Johann Sebastian Bach, one of the greatest composers ever, was known to have written those words in the margins of his music scores. He knew that all his gifts, his talent, his brilliance was a gift from God. His creative genius not his, but God working through him to bring glory to Himself.
To God alone be the glory.
So I wondered - how do I use the creative gifts God has given me to bring glory to Him?
Do I bring glory to Him? Do I consider my creative acts to be an act of worship? Of praise to God who has gifted me?
Maybe the "Do I" is more important than the 'how.
For it's not my ability - it's God working through me to bring glory to Himself.
God has gifted each of us uniquely.
Created us to be creative for Him.
When we stop to consider why He has gifted us in the first place we have to remember that He is the author of creativity itself.
He made ALL things. He made us.
Every art, every act, every dream, plan or idea happens because He designed us to be creative.
In HIS image.
"So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." - Genesis 1:27 (NLT)
The dictionary defines the word CREATE this way: to cause to come into being.
God spoke us into life.
In HIS image.
So, when we use our unique creative gifts, it's not only an act of worship, it's a transformation.
We are becoming more like the God who created us in HIS image.
It's His hearts desire for us to be like Him.
Our creativity is part of our journey towards holiness. It shapes who we become for Him.
"...Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy." - Leviticus 19:2b
A few of you are thinking “I’m not creative.” “I don’t have that gift.” “I’m just a…..”
Ok, stop.
"So God created human beings in his own image.”
Soli Deo Gloria.
To Him alone be the glory.
When we think about being creative, we always consider the obvious - writer, artist, sculptor, illustrator, musician, painter, dancer, actor.
The arts are the easy ones.
But what about the not so obvious?
What has God put in your heart to do, that only you can do in your way just for Him?
For His glory?
Soli Deo Gloria.
Do you cook? Garden? Clean? Are you an architect? A builder? A doctor? Nurse? File Clerk? Teacher? Student? Salesman?
Do you lay brick? Drive a truck? Handle accounts? Argue cases in court? Put out fires? Direct traffic? Play hockey? Figure skate? Drive a zamboni?
The world has many names for creative - handy, clever, inventive, innovative.
And it’s not so much in WHAT we do, it’s how we do it. The way we use our God given creativity to touch the lives of those around us.
You may be a stay-at-home Mom, surrounded by dirty dishes, piles of laundry and carpool duty. Hardly the stuff of artistic inspiration by the world’s standards. But only you are uniquely positioned to create a loving environment for your family by how you handle the tasks in your every day.
Soli Deo Gloria.
"So God created human beings in his own image.”
"Then God looked over all he had made and he saw that it was very good!" - Genesis 1:31 (NLT)
Soli Deo Gloria.
To Him alone be the glory.
With a Courageous Heart,
~~Robin

A Realization of Grace
"In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well." - Romans 12:6a
I sat on the cold metal bleachers and watched my daughter take the ice yesterday.
There was a visible relaxation to her body as her blades began to glide across the familiar surface of the ice rink she loves. It had been a week since she had been able to skate. We'd been traveling and busy over the holidays so her normal 5 day a week practice schedule was all out of whack.
And it showed.
She was edgy, irritated, crabby.
And she was skating in the parking lot.
In the store aisles.
On the hardwood floor in our living room.
So when she finally took the ice yesterday all that pent up energy, that creativity, that freedom was released with every push of her blades.
She was home.
My daughter Emma is a competitive figure skater.
No, she probably will not go to the Olympics. (It's always the first question she gets, so I figured I'd answer that first and not leave you hanging.)
Anyway, Emma has been skating since the age of 4. She's just turned 16, so yes, that's a long time. 12 years if you're doing the math.
I can still remember sitting on the couch with her, watching the Olympic skating in Salt Lake City. She said "Mommy, I want to do that!"
No. I did not run to the nearest ice rink to sign her up for lessons.
My bad. But I had one of those "You want to do WHAT?" moments that lasted until she wore me down about 6 months later.
Even at age 4, Emma seemed to know that the ice rink was where she belonged.
It's like she just knew that it was important. Knew that it would matter.
And it's actually been pretty mind-blowing to watch her love for the sport change and grow over the last 12 years.
Like most athletes, she's had her roller-coaster ride moments, ready to quit one week, can't stand to be off the ice the next. Most of that due to things out of her control - a prickly coach, a mean-girl fellow skater, a bad fall and the big one - our home rink collapsed during a very bad winter and we found ourselves driving an hour one way for ice time. Yeah, that about did us both in.
But about 3 years ago the move switch inside her got flipped to full-throttle and it's been all systems go ever since.
She has a passion for the ice that is like a living, breathing thing inside her.
She's happiest when she's on the ice.
It's her joy; her solace; her freedom.
It's her unique gift from the God who loves her completely and He is glorified each time she gives way to the passion he's put inside her.
And it's also her future.
Not many 16 year olds can say that they know what they want to do for the rest of their lives, but my girl, my strangely mature, yet still child-like girl knows exactly what she wants to do.
She wants to be a skating coach and choreographer. And yes, that just blows me away.
To be so sure of who you are, of the gift of purpose that God has given you just stuns me.
But I see it. I see it in the way she patiently works with the younger skaters on her synchronized team. They flock to her like a big sister and eat it up when she helps them with steps and moves on the ice and love and wisdom off the ice. They love to watch her skate and stop everything to see her do her program either in practice or in a show.
Not because she is the best, but because she loves it so much. And she loves them too. It shows.
She is radiant with the joy it brings her.
I see it in the way she doggedly works to perfect a program. I see it in her frustration over a move or jump or spin that just won't come easily. I see it in her when she skates on my living room floor or works out steps under the dinner table.
Skating is part of her and she could no more deny it than she could deny her nose.
So, sitting in those cold bleachers yesterday got me thinking - where do I find my joy, my solace, my freedom?
When is my heart at home?
It's when I write.
Moving my thoughts and ideas and inspiration to written words gives me a peace so palpable, it moves me to tears at times.
It's a physical release, a relief to get the story out.
Sometimes it just won't leave me alone, pushing insistently against the edges of my brain until it hurts.
And when I don't heed it's insistence, I get edgy, crabby, irritated.
It took me a long time to pay attention to God's still small voice - and His shouting too - and trust Him that this is what I'm supposed to be doing.
But it took me a long time to become the person God intends me to be. The woman he can use.
I'm still getting there, a little bit more every day. That's a journey that will only be complete when I stand in his presence one day.
For now, it takes a daily surrender. A moment by moment awareness that it's not my life anyway - it's all His.
And all for His glory.
That's a realization of grace.
With a Courageous Heart,
~~Robin

2014 - A Year of Living Awesomely!
Is this your view?
It's mine.
Well, those aren't my actual loafers, but that's right where I'm standing.
Actually, this was my real view this morning:
Not as exciting to look at, huh?
Nope, not if that's your attitude.
But it doesn't have to be. And it's not gonna be mine.
Not this year.
And honestly, not ever again.
Because as of yesterday, I planted my feet firmly on the edge of a cliff.
This year is the year I jump.
It's the year of living AWESOMELY. (that's a great word, I don't even need to add an exclamation point to it.)
So, listen. Don't you love it when God just shows up? I mean, plants his truth right in your path and it's exactly what you needed to hear at exactly the right time?
(actually, He does that all the time, but mostly we're too busy on our smart phones to notice it. Uh-huh, you know who you are.)
I heard His voice twice already today, both after coffee, but that's grace, right? He knows me pretty well.
The first was in the word - always a good place to start.
2 Corinthians 5:17 - "...anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!" (NLT)
How stunning is that?
Isn't God the best motivational speaker EVER?
I belong to Christ - therefore, I am new. I have a new life.
And that's not just a one time deal - we have new life every day.
A fresh 24 hours of LIFE.
I don't know about you, but I don't want to waste that time just trudging through. So, this year - I choose to live AWESOMELY.
In the car pool line at school.
Doing laundry.
Sitting at the ice rink 5 days a week, freezing my parts off.
Walking the dog, checking homework, having surgery (yeah, that's happening), loving my family....
It's ALL a gift.
This year, I'm pursuing God's best.
Actively looking for the awesome in every day.
Because it's there, really and truly, it's there.
And we even have instructions. Wanna see?
2 Corinthians 5:15 - "...those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ" (NLT)
WHY?
2 Corinthians 5:14 - "...Christ’s love controls us." (NLT)
or in the NIV - "...Christ's love compels us."
What is Christ's love compelling you to do?
What is your awesome this year?
Where will it take you?
Are you living for yourself - if you're in Christ you might want to re-think that. It's a waste of time anyway - you know that, right?
The second place that God showed up this morning was unexpected.
I discovered a fresh voice in kind of a roundabout way, but that's God's way sometimes and it's pretty cool.
Anyway, I read a couple of his blog posts (It's mattham.com if you want to check him out) and found this quote:
"Life will be full of moments that can define you, derail you or drive you.
You make the choice on how you respond.
The tragedy of difficult times is when we let them defeat us.
Refuse to be defeated. Instead, continue."
Difficult times??? Check.
Been there, done that, wore out that t-shirt.
But look, how can we "refuse to be defeated"?
We can CHOOSE to Live AWESOMELY.
With a Courageous Heart,
~~Robin

"Life will be full of moments that can define you, derail you or drive you.
You make the choice on how you respond.
The tragedy of difficult times is when we let them defeat us.
Refuse to be defeated. Instead, continue."
Difficult times??? Check.
Been there, done that, wore out that t-shirt.
But look, how can we "refuse to be defeated"?
We can CHOOSE to Live AWESOMELY.

Something New - an Anticipation
From my Facebook Page - A Courageous Heart (12/31/13)
New Year's Eve is for many, a day of reflection and a day of anticipation.
As I take one last look back at the year that's been, my thoughts turn to all that God has brought our family through. It's been a year of tears, trial and difficulty in ways we could never have imagined last January 1st.
BUT,
it's also been a year of great JOY and tremendous blessing.
God chose to allow us to walk through dark days - not alone, but led by His hand and He showed us beauty in the darkness.
He chose to take my Mother home to him, and he chose to add a special young man to our small family.
He chose to challenge me with a new work, a new journey and he chose to grow my husband and daughter in ways they never saw coming.
ALL joy!
Looking ahead to next year, I was challenged to find a verse to be my focus and as God would have it, it fell in my lap this morning as I did my quiet time.
Isaiah 43 is a chapter of immense reassurance and great promise. What I really love there is how the Lord lists all that He has done to rescue the Israelites and recounts His amazing promise to rescue them still.
But verse 18 tells us to "forget all that" because "it is nothing compared to what I am going to do" Wow!
That takes my breath away when I apply it to my life this past year and see His hand and his goodness on display even in the midst of pain.
And it gets better!
In verse 19 He says -
"For I am about to do something new.
See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?
I will make a pathway through the wilderness.
I will create rivers in the dry wasteland."
and in verse 20b -
"...Yes, I will make rivers in the dry wasteland
so my chosen people can be refreshed."
I don't know where your journey has taken you this year, but I know that I look forward to his river of refreshing. To this "new thing" that He's "already begun".
My prayer is that whatever it is, that it bring honor and glory to Him and Him alone.
Happy New Year friends, I'll be praying for you this year.
Praying that God takes you on an amazing journey as He does new and wonderful things in your lives.

The Power of Christmas - An Advent Story, Part 5
This year, it has once again been my privilege to participate in the celebration of the Advent Season with my church family.
The story that God has prompted me to write has appeared here on my blog each week this month. I was thrilled to be able to share these writings with you and I hope the story has been a blessing to you and your families this season. The story is a continuing tale that took us through a contemporary application of the biblical truth of Christmas

He was seeing the power of God in their lives now too and he loved seeing them transformed by it’s simple truth. The gospel – Jesus – is powerful enough to save anyone, anywhere, no matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been. Is there anyone else that can love you that way?
For so many years, Izzy had believed that he didn’t belong anywhere, to anyone – he’d had no roots anymore, no place in this world. But Jesus had changed that and he marveled at the truth of it all. Romans 1:6 had become his life verse and its beautiful promise brought new healing to his heart each time he read it. “And you also are among those who are called to BELONG to Jesus Christ.” That meant everyone in this room, all his loved ones, his friends and family and yes, even him.
Izzy had a place.
He had a purpose for his life and he belonged.
Belonged to Jesus.
That was the Power of Christmas.

The laughter coming from around the dinner table was
contagious and it gave the room a warmth it had rarely felt before. Izzy was
playing host tonight, enjoying the presence of his family and friends as they
celebrated Christmas together.
As he gazed around the table, his eyes took in the smiles
and happy contentment on the faces there. Each one important to him in a way
that he’d never thought possible. Had it really been a year? Just one year since he’d asked Jesus to fix
his broken life and broken heart? He shook his head slowly, hardly believing
how much his life had changed, how he had changed as he had let go of
his anger and bitterness. Izzy remembered how he’d felt that night, last
Christmas Eve, the weight of 10 years of pain falling from his shoulders. It
was as if he’d been released from a prison – one of his own making – yet one
that couldn’t stop the deep, deep love of Christ from reaching through those
thick walls. He knew then that he’d never be the same again, and he had been
right.
When the small service in the boys shelter had finished,
Izzy talked with Juan, the pastor – his pastor now - long into the evening.
Juan had shown him passages in the Bible that helped explain more fully what
his decision to follow Jesus had really meant. When he had finally left for his
sister’s home he could hardly contain himself as he thought about how happy
Mary Beth and Joe would be.
He’d been right about that too. He remembered the tears Mary
Beth had cried when he shared his good news with her. Looking at her tonight as
she and her family shared his table, you’d never remember the pain in her eyes
that used to settle there when she’d spent time with him before. Izzy hadn’t
realized just how much his rejection of Jesus had affected her and he was so
glad that now, they were not only brother and sister in the flesh, but also
brother and sister in Christ. And it would always be so, for nothing could take
that away from them. Ever.
This past year, Izzy had been like a sponge, absorbing all
he could about Jesus. Studying the Bible like crazy and finding he was always
thirsty for more. He’d come to love certain passages and verses, the book of
Romans was one of his favorites, it’s boldness speaking right to the heart of
his reporter’s logical thought processes. The power of God’s word was amazing
and he was evidence of that. What was that verse in Luke? “Nothing shall be impossible with
God.” That had been him, hard-headed, hard-hearted, but even his broken
life could be healed by the power of God.
It still amazed him that God would
love him that much.
Enough to never give up on him, that was truly a miracle.
Izzy had been especially grateful for Juan and the time he
had taken with him to help him learn to really study God’s word and to apply it
to his life. He knew now that it was no chance meeting at the mall last year.
God knew exactly what he’d been up to with that. Look where this friendship had
led – to Izzy volunteering at the boys shelter, helping teenagers much like
himself at that age. Lonely, angry, confused and struggling to find a purpose
for their lives.
Last year, Izzy had wondered about those boys in the church
service. Wondered what their stories were, why they were in the shelter that
night. It didn’t take him long to discover that many had stories similar to his
own. Parents dead, or left; no homes; runaways; all living on the fringe of
community and desperate for a decent life. He’d come to understand that God
never wastes an experience and all that he had been through as a teen, losing
his parents, his anger at God, his rejection of friendships and attachment, his
stubborn drive to prove himself, all of that God was using to allow him to
reach out with a real understanding of what many of these lost boys were living
daily.
He was seeing the power of God in their lives now too and he loved seeing them transformed by it’s simple truth. The gospel – Jesus – is powerful enough to save anyone, anywhere, no matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been. Is there anyone else that can love you that way?
